Friday's Photo: The Last Wieland Family Photos

DeRay Bryan, Unknown Man, Unknown Woman, Chris Wieland - Taken between 1930 and 1935

These are the last Wieland family photos that I will post. All of the Wieland family photos I have belonged to my Aunt DeRay Bryan. The Wieland's were not family. Dad said Chris Wieland was DeRay's boyfriend. 

I have a lot of photos of Chris Wieland posted here, photos from his funeral posted here, and a portrait of his parents posted here. 

There is nothing written on the back of the above photo, but I remember clearly Dad telling me that the couple in the middle was Chris Wieland's parents. That would be Frank and Mary Wieland. However, when enlarging the photo and comparing it to Chris Wieland's parents in the below photo that was taken about the same time, I can say that I don't believe it is the same couple.

I have looked at the Wieland brothers' draft cards and all those I found appear to be of medium build except Guy Edward Wieland. Guy was described as tall and slender on his WWI draft registration and 6 feet tall on his WWII draft registration. Guy is the eldest Wieland brother, born five years before Chris Wieland. 

I believe that Guy and his wife are the most likely candidates, but need input from family. The photo of Guy on the left was published in a newspaper in 1960. Click here to see the article about his retirement.

Friday's Photo: Mr. and Mrs. Wieland

For years, I have tried to identify the couple in this photo taken in Oakand, California. Were they family? Friends? Did family live in California? Some did, but none matched this couple. This photo belonged to my Aunt DeRay Bryan. 

After researching DeRay's friend, Chris Wieland, I thought about this photo. His family lived in Oakland, California. A fellow genealogist with Chris Wieland in her Ancestry.com Public Tree sent me the below photo of some Wieland family members in California.

Mystery solved! My unknown couple was Frank Anthony Wieland and his wife, Mary "Mamie" Theresa Schafer/Schaefer.  Click on their names to see a little about Frank and Mamie. They were the parents of DeRay's friend Chris Wieland. 

This photo was taken at Chris Wieland's funeral in Kansas. The older woman appears to be his mother, the younger
could possibly be a sister or sister-in-law.

Chris Boss Wieland

Chris Boss Wieland - This appears to be the Bryan home. 

I have 18 photos of Chris Boss Wieland, two photos taken at his funeral, and a photo of his parents. He is not my family, but was obviously a very good friend of my Aunt DeRay Bryan.  

My father remembered Chris by his first and last name and labeled most of the photos. 

Chris has been seen in records as Christ, Chris, and Christian. Wieland has also been seen as Weiland.

Chris was born on February 22, 1899 in Kansas.  He was one of eight children of Frank Anthony Wieland and Mary Theresa Schafer. Other Wieland children were Guy Edward, Omer Everett, Walter V., Marie C., Gertrude Anna, Louis J., Leonard John, and Sylvester (Wes) Anthony. 

By 1920 he was living on his own in Vernon, Kay County, Oklahoma and in 1921, he married 18 year old Mildred Ferrell in Newkirk, Kay County, Oklahoma

In the late 1920s, he was working for the Ferndale Motor Company. Visit my post Family Photos: Automotive Businesses to see a photo of the Ferndale Motor Company found with my aunt's photos. 

In 1930 he was living with his wife on Weatherly Street in Borger, Texas. His brothers Omer and Leonard also lived in Borger. I don't know if Chris and his wife divorced or if she passed away, but he appears to be with Aunt DeRay in the 1930s.

Chris passed away on December 22, 1935. You can see photos of his funeral day and his grave site at my post I Found the Bell Tower AND it is NOT in Texas!

I have created a family tree with much of the information I found about Chris, his parents, and siblings. I Found the Bell Tower AND it is NOT in Texas!

On Friday, I posted the two photos seen below. I have been looking for the bell tower and the identity of those women for 18+ years. 

Years ago, I searched for this cemetery in Texas; visiting cemeteries, writing to other genealogists in counties where my families lived, and posting these photos on a variety of websites.  All with no success. 

Hours before posting these photos on Friday, I searched Newspapers.com and GenealogyBank for old newspapers mentioning a bell tower in a cemetery. I did a Google image search and checked the Texas History Portal. Again, no success!

I need to mention that I am currently organizing all of the photos that belonged to my father's brother and three sisters.  They are spread out on the dining room table and I try to make a little progress each day. So, after posting the cemetery photos on my blog, I decided to spend a little time with the photos on the dining room table. 

I don't know how long my Aunt DeRay dated Chris,
but they certainly looked happy in her photos.
It was sad to see that he died so young. 

Dad's sister, DeRay Bryan, didn't marry, but a large number of her photos were DeRay and a man, Chris Wieland. Most were taken in or near Borger, Texas.

A quick search for Chris Wieland, came up with a wife (Mildred) on the 1930 census in Borger and his full name, Chris Boss Wieland, on his WWI draft registration in Kay, Oklahoma. Both documents indicated that he worked as a mechanic in a garage. At Ancestry.com, I found he had a large number of siblings and that his parents resided in at least three states during their marriage; Kansas, Oklahoma, and California. Chris' brother, Leonard J. Wieland, owned a garage in Borger. 

At Find A Grave, I found Chris Wieland's grave in Cowley County, Kansas. He died December 22, 1935. Very surprised at his death date, I searched several genealogy sites for information about his death with no success.  I went back to Find - A - Grave, but didn't see any additional information and just as as I was ready to close the site, I noticed the bell tower.

The photos were taken at Chris Wieland's funeral in Kansas! The women in the photo are most likely Wieland family or friends. Another photo mystery solved!

Chris B. Wieland is buried in section C53, along with his brother, Guy, and his sister-in-law, Nell.
