Friday's Photo: My Grandmother, Edith Giddens, and her Niece, Evelyn James in Phillipsburg, NJ

This is my grandmother, Edith Giddens, in about 1927. She was visiting Phillipsburg. She might have been living in South Orange, New Jersey at the house on Irvington Avenue with her brother, Charles Giddens, and his wife, Louise Uhde. Sometime the next year Grandma was living in Newark. 

Grandma is standing with her niece, Evelyn James. Evelyn was the daughter of Grandma's sister, Elizabeth Giddens, and her husband, Louis James. The James family was living in Easton, PA in 1923 but by 1930 they owned the home at 28 Reese Court in Phillipsburg. I have other photos of Giddens family standing in this spot. Is this the home on Reese Court? Maybe in the back? 

The home at 28 Reese Court was built in 1900. Recorded on the 1930 United States Census, Louis James, his wife, and their children Dorothy, Evelyn, and John were living in the home. 

Also living with the family was Evans James, father of Louis James. It was reported that Louis James owned the home and its value was $3,000.00.

The house can currently be found at Realtor.com with an estimated value of $105,000. It has one bath and three bedrooms. Interior photos can also be found at Realtor.com.

Friday's Photo: John H. James

This photo was found in an album that once belonged to my grandmother, Edith Giddens Davis. Grandma's sister, Elizabeth Giddens, was married to Louis James. John H. James (pictured left) was Louis' brother. 

John H. James was born in Phillipsburg, New Jersey on August 10, 1892. His parents, Evan T. James and Susanna Miller, were married in 1891.  James' brother, Louis was the only other child. Susanna died on May 21, 1894 and Evan married Mary House in 1896.  

John joined the Marines in 1917 and sailed for France on November 19, 1917. He served as a private in the 6th Regiment, 82nd Company in the 2nd Marine Division. According to his gravestone, he was wounded at St. Etienne on October 6th and died in Mailly Aube, France on October 27, 1918. John is buried in the Hays Cemetery in Easton, Pennsylvania. His regiment participated in the capture of Blanc Mont Ridge. To read more about this, click here.

My new grandson

As I have a new grandson and my friends are calling me grandma, I thought I would post a photo of grandparents. This photo, belonging to my mother, has several! 

The baby in the above photo is Dorothy James, born September 14, 1917 to Elizabeth Giddens James and Louis Miller James. Elizabeth Giddens James was my grandmother's sister. Baby Dorothy was my mother's first cousin. 

Elizabeth was the daughter of Mary "Lucy" Glynn and Charles Giddens. Lucy is pictured above.

Louis was the son of Evan Thomas James and Susanna Miller James. Evan Thomas James is holding Dorothy. Grandma and Grandpa House may be the parents of Grandpa James second wife, Mary House. 

The location of the photo is not known. It was most likely taken in Phillipsburg, New Jersey as many of the family members lived there in 1917.

Friday's Photo: The James Children

Dorothy (1917-2000), John (1922-1931), and Evelyn James (1920-2012) 

This photo and many other treasured Giddens family photos can be found in a box at my mother's home. These children were my mother's first cousins. They were the children of my grandmother's sister, Elizabeth Giddens, and Louis James. 

Labeled "Griffin, Easton, PA," the photo was probably taken in Easton in the mid 1920s. Louis and Elizabeth can be found in available Easton city directories in 1923, 1925, and 1927.

Friday's Photo: Family and a Friend

From left to right: Babe, Edith, Florence and Dot.

My grandmother mentioned a Babe Lutz. Is this the same Babe? Edith Giddens was my grandmother and Florence Giddens Samer was her sister. Dot was Dorothy James, the child of Elizabeth Giddens James and sister to Edith and Florence.

This photo is from my grandmother's album.  It is dated 1927. The place is unknown. It might be Phillipsburg, New Jersey. This house with the balcony has been seen in other photos. Does anyone know whose house and where?

Friday's Photo: Another Giddens Family Photograph

This Giddens photo was found in an album that belonged to my grandmother, Edith Giddens Davis. Charles Giddens was her brother and his wife, standing beside him, was Louise Uhde.  The tallest girl is Doris, the daughter of Charles' brother, Warren. The other girl is unknown. I wondered if this could be Evelyn James, daughter of Elizabeth Giddens James, who would be about a year younger than Doris. However, I don't have any photos of Evelyn during this time to compare. 

The photo is not marked, but in the album it is dated "about 1928." My mother wrote this when my grandmother was still living. It is presumed  that the photo was taken in New Jersey.

Friday's Photo: Dorothy Elizabeth James

Dorothy Elizabeth James Thatcher  1917 - 2000

Dorothy Elizabeth James was the child of Elizabeth Frances Giddens and Louis Miller James. In 1939, she married Chester Harold Thatcher. Dorothy's mother, Elizabeth, was the sister of my grandmother, Edith Giddens. Below are some photos that were found in my grandmother's photograph album.

In honor of today's reunion with a Giddens descendant, I am posting photos of his grandmother, Elizabeth Giddens. Elizabeth was the daughter of Charles Giddens and Mary Lucy Glynn.

Friday's Photo: Elizabeth Giddens James and Family

This is another picture that belonged to my grandmother, Edith Giddens Davis. The date on the back is 1917. 

Pictured in the back are, Elizabeth Giddens James (sister of my grandmother), Louis Miller James (husband of Elizabeth), and Lucy Glynn Giddens (mother of Edith and Elizabeth). 

In the front row are William H. House, Evan Thomas James, and Martha S. House. Evan Thomas James is the father of Louis Miller James. He was first married to Susanna Miller (mother of Louis) and after her death, married Mary House. William and Martha House were Mary's parents. Mary House James died in 1915. 

Evan Thomas James is holding his granddaughter, Dorothy Elizabeth James who was born on September 14, 1917 in New Jersey.
