County Clare, Bienville Parish, Phillipsburg, and Siberia

This blog is a relatively small blog in the blogger world. On average, I get about 2000 legitimate link clicks each month, most by the same set of readers. I love writing the blog and do not plan to stop. Writing the posts keeps me organized and has improved my research skills. It allows me to share my finds with those who are interested, collaborate with others, and, most importantly, find family. 

This year, I have written 78 posts. My most-read post, in 2020, was about my husband's great-aunt's store in New Quay, County Clare, Ireland. I learned much about New Quay while researching for Julia Moylan's Store on the Flaggy Shore.

The second of my top three posts, Friday's Photo: Charles William Giddens, told of my Great-Uncle Charlie and his service in World War I and World War II. Uncle Charlie lived in Phillipsburg, New Jersey when he first joined the Army in 1911 and he remained in New Jersey until World War II when he entered the United States Naval Reserve to be an instructor at the Naval Air Gunners School.

Three Bryan Cemetery Monuments Beautifully Restored in Bienville Parish was my third most-read post. The Bryan Cemetery is located in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. 

My all-time favorite posts this year were those regarding the photos of Almus and Lillie Beck in Siberia. Almus and Lillie were not my family and I was looking for a good home for the photos. As only four of many photos were labeled, I started with almost nothing and came upon an incredible story. The photos now have a good home at the National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri.

Julia Moylan's Store on the Flaggy Shore

the only restaurant nearby, AND they had wifi.

 We visited Ireland in 2016. Our trip was about family history. Not so much for research, but to spend time learning about where my husband's family lived. I loved the experience. We spent several nights in a small building on the grounds of the Rhodesia House (also known as the New Quay House) in New Quay, County Clare. We were just down the road from the land owned by my husband's great-grandparents. We ate at Linnane's Lobster Bar three or four times and we visited the beautiful Flaggy Shore. 

The first day we visited the Flaggy Shore, I took in the beautiful views and never noticed the dilapidated, abandoned building on the left as we turned onto the road. Later, while telling our Airbnb host about our family, she brought up the building and told us it was Julia Moylan's store. Julia Murray Moylan was the sister of Susan Murray Quinn, my husband's grandmother. Their parents were Cecilia Linane and James Murray who lived in the vicinity of New Quay. Julia grew up in the area and remained there until her death.

I was fascinated by the area and, of course, wanted to know more. Once at home, my usual searches did not tell me much about New Quay and the surrounding area until I checked Facebook. The Flaggy Shore and Blow it Open. A Flaggy Shore Miscellany Facebook pages gave me so much more than expected. I loved the photos and the history. Julia's photo had been posted on the Blow it Open. A Flaggy Shore Miscellany page. And, group members commented about Julia and her store.  

I learned that Julia sold ice cream, candy, cigarettes, and more in her store. This was her home as well. Some called it the local youth club where young peopled played cards and one wrote, What happened in Julia's should stay in Julia's. Julia was described as a nice lady with a good heart. Others remember dropping money in a plastic container for self-serve and Julia's old bicycle parked in front of her home. 





In addition to the comments, paintings of Julia's store were posted.  Artist, Joyce Shee has painted Julia's home many times. I purchased the painting at the top of this post and Joyce shared paintings of the inside of Julia's home as well. Joyce Shee shared these photos of the inside of the store. The windows and doors are now closed off with cement blocks.

Friday's Photo: Julia Murray Moylan and Her Family

I first posted Julia Murray Moylan's photo in 2012 with very little known information. Baptized, March 25, 1893, Julia Murray was the daughter of James Murray and Celia Linnane in Ballyvelaghan, County Clare, Ireland. The  10th of 11 known children, she was the only child to remain in the Ballyvelaghan area and only one of two to remain in Ireland. 

Julia married Patrick Joseph Moylan. He died in 1956 after a bicycle accident in front of their home. Click here to see his obituary. Julia and Patrick had two children, Patrick and James. 

Son, Patrick, immigrated to the United States and lived with William and Susan Murray Quinn in NYC for a time.  A photo of Patrick and his obituary can be seen at this link. 

Son, James, lived in South Wales for 30 years before his death in 1987. 

Julia died on November 30, 1988 and is buried in Cillin Graveyard along with her husband and son, James.

Friday's Photo: A Cemetery in New Quay, County Clare

I expected to find this cemetery near St. Patrick's Catholic Church. It wasn't far, about three quarters of a mile - one minute by car or a 15 minute walk. My husband's great-grandparents are said to be buried in Cillin Graveyard. It was anglicized as Killeen Cemetery in obituaries found in Irish newspapers 

You can see this cemetery up close, including photos of each gravestone, by visiting this link at Irish Graveyards. My husband's great-great grandfather, Patt Murray, is listed as being buried in the cemetery. Julia Murray Moylan and her family are buried very close to Patt Murray. There is no mention of my husband's great-grandparents, James Murray and his wife, Celia Linnane. However, it is very likely they are buried in the grave or same area as Patt Murray. The gravestone can no longer be read and I wouldn't be surprised if there are more names on the stone.

Friday's Photo: Three of the Murray Sisters

This old Polaroid photo was sent to me in the 1990s by Paddy and Theresa Moylan. The three older women, from left to right, are Catherine "Kate" Murray McGing, Sarah Murray Meehan, and Susan Murray Quinn.  I can't identify the man in the picture, but was told that the woman next to him was Theresa Moylan. 

Does anyone recognize the man? Does anyone have pictures of Kate and Sarah when they were younger.

Sunday's Obituary: Patrick Joseph Moylan

Cousins - William Quinn, Patrick "Paddy" Moylan, and James McGing

Patrick Joseph Moylan 

ALLAMUCHY TWP. -- Patrick Joseph Moylan, 82, died on Friday, July 31, 2009, at Hackettstown Regional Medical Center. He was born on July 29, 1927 in New Quay, County Clare, Ireland.

The son of the late Patrick J. Sr. and Julia (Murray) Moylan, he was the husband of Theresa (Carty) Moylan. Mr. Moylan lived in Sparta before moving to Panther Valley, Allamuchy Township, five years ago. He was a bus driver for the New York City Transit Authority for 30 years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of Our Lady of the Mountain R.C. Church in Schooley's Mountain, Long Valley. Mr. Moylan was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1954-1956.

Mr. Moylan is survived by his wife, Theresa, at home; his sisters-in-law, Eileen Curran and her husband, Patrick, of Lynbrook, N.Y., Mary Haynes of Congers, N.Y. and Phyllis Carty of Sparta, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, Tom Carty and his wife, Charlotte, of Southaven, Miss.; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Mountain R.C. Church. Visitation will be held on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown. Interment will take place in Tranquility Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Friday's Photo: Julia Murray Moylan

Julia Murray was born on March 25, 1893, Ballyvelaghan in the old Parish of Abby, now New-Quay, County Clare, Ireland.  She was the only child to remain in her home town and only one of two to remain in Ireland. She married Patrick Joseph Moylan. He died in 1956 and Julia died in New Quay on November 30, 1988.

Do you know where Julia is buried? Is she buried near her parents?

Sunday’s Obituary: Mary Murray Kingsley

Mrs. Mary Kingsley

    

Mrs. Mary Kingsley, 75, 362 W. Locust Street, died Wednesday morning at Mercy Hospital after an illness of four weeks.

Friends may call after 7 p.m. Thursday at the Didesch Funeral Home from where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday to St. Patrick’s Church.  Burial will be in St. Philomena Cemetery, Asbury.  The Rosary will be recited at 8:15 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Kingsley was born 75 years ago in County Clare, Ireland.  She came to Dubuque from Ireland 59 years ago. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church and of its Rosary Society. She was a daughter of the late James and Cecelia Linane Murray and was married to the late William Kingsley in October of 1899.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Frank (Sarah) Wiedner and two sons, William Kingsley and Joseph J. Kingsley all of Dubuque, six sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Delia) Kingsley Dubuque, Mrs. Edwin (Sarah) Meehan, Mrs. Peter (Katherine) McGing,  and Mrs. William (Susan) Quinn all of New York, NY and Sister M. Columbkille, Order of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, Columbus, Ohio; one brother, Patrick Murray, and one sister, Julia {Moylan}, both in Ireland.

Mary left Ireland prior to her younger sister's birth so never met Susan Quinn. Mary Murray married William Kingsley and her sister Bridget (Delia) married Joseph Kingsley, William's brother. For more about Mary, click here to visit my web pages.

The picture is not dated, but appears to have been taken in the 1940s.
