Friday's Photo: Augustus M. Williamson

This photograph is from the Marguerite Cook Cark collection.[1] The young man’s noticeably short hair, wide tie, and small lapels indicate that it was probably taken between 1890 and 1900.[2] Across the top of the photo is written “Mr. Guss Williamson Pictur.”  On the back at the top is “Mr. Guss Williamson Ringgold Louisiana.” Also, on the back is “Saturday eve Dec 28 1917 didn’t have much of a time Xmas.” There is more on the back, but it is not legible.

 

This last portion of the photo shows a name that is upside down and at the bottom
of the photo. It may be Jonathan Corly or Cook, Ringgold, La. 

If this is Guss Williamson and taken in the 1890s, it is most likely Augustus M. Williamson who married Carrie V. Corely on 26 February 1899 in Red River Parish, Louisiana. Could this have been taken on their wedding day? By 1910, they had four children: Lena, Jesse James, Alfred, and Claud Clarence.[3]  The youngest, Audrey “Polly” Williamson, was born in 1911.[4]

 Carrie died in 1913, Lena in 1914, and Augustus passed away in 1917.[5] Jesse James eventually moved to Texas while Audrey, Alfred, and Claud Clarence remained in Louisiana.[6]

Friday's Photo: Dr. Francis Fleming Wimberly

On the back: Dr. F. F. Wimberly, Ringgold, LA

Doctor Frances Fleming Wimberly was the son of Charles Perry Wimberly and Lucy Adeline Thomas. He was born on September 8, 1875 and died on October 12, 1948. He maried Annie Ethel "Dollie" Corley on February 9, 1898. 

According to the Wimberly Family History, at age 17, Francis Fleming "Doc" Wimberly went to west Texas where he bought horses and drove them back to Louisiana to trade for cattle which he drove back to Texas. He attended the University of Tennessee and finished his medical training at the Memphis Hospital Medical College. Dates reported in the book conflicted but we can safely say he graduated from medical school by 1907. It was reported that he practiced first in his home of Red River Parish and in January of 1913 moved to Ringgold where he practiced for more than 39 years.

Friday's Photo: An Important Celebration in Bienville Parish

My Bryan family ancestors took quite a few photographs and they can be found all over the United States. On Sunday, I posted a photo of Joe and Josie Cook along with an article about their golden anniversary celebration. These were found in Marguerite Cook Clark's collection. Fourteen hundred miles away from Marguerite Cook Clark's collection is the Frye Family collection where photos of those who attended the celebration can be found. 

I was able to identify the family in these photos with the help of a few readable labels in the photo album and by looking at other identified photos. However, there could be an error in the identification of the women. If you find a mistake, please contact me or leave a comment on my blog. 

Under the photo in the picture was written Mrs. Liza Davis, Mrs. Lizzie Bryan, Mrs. S. E. Frye, Mrs. Erie Bryan. Above the photo Mr. and Mrs. John L. Wimberly can be seen. Rev. Thomas Martin, Laura Bryan Martin, Josie Bryan Cook, and Joe W. Cook were seen in other identified family photos.

Above this photo "their children" is written. Comparing these men and women with other photos of Josie and Joe's children, allowed me to identify family members in this photograph.

Friday's Photo: Thomas "Tom" Corley and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Cook

I am grateful to all of those who shared family photos and documents. When I began my research, I knew almost nothing about my family - not even family names. Those who shared helped me learn far more than I ever expected.

Today's photos were shared by families who don't know each other, live in different states, but are all descendants of my great-great-grandparents, Reddick Bryan and Elizabeth Regan, who settled in Bienville Parish, Louisiana in 1838. 

These photos appear to have been taken on the same day. It is assumed to be the couple's wedding day, March 8, 1904 in Ringgold, Bienville Parish, Louisiana. 

Both Tom and Lizzie were born in Ringgold and both remained in Ringgold until their deaths. 

Lizzie was the daughter of Josie S. C. Bryan and Joseph W. Cook. Tom was the son of Hiram L. Corley and Sarah E. Knighton. 

Lizzie and Tom had three children; Alice Maude Corley, Joe Knighton Corley, and Hiram Lockhart Corley. 

Lizzie died at age 39 on June 6, 1920. Tom died much later on March 8, 1974. Both are buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Ringgold.
