Friday's Photo: Ina Lou and her mother, Terrell "Bunch" Bryan Biggs

Terrell Little "Bunch' Bryan was born on 13 July 1861 in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. She was my grandfather's sister and the daughter of Terrell Bryan and Harriet Albritton.

Ina Lou Biggs was the youngest daughter of Terrell "Bunch" Bryan and James Daniel Biggs. She was born on 26 September 1894 in Erath County, Texas. The Biggs family lived in Morgan Mill.

The photo was dated as about 1910 by Susan Pierce, daughter of Ina Lou Biggs. At that time, the Biggs family was still residing in Morgan Mill in Erath County.

Additional Biggs family posts can be seen at the links below.

Family notes from the Baylor County Banner, Baylor County, Texas - 1908

The following 1908 excerpts were found in Baylor County Banner issues on a microfilm reel labeled "Baylor County Banner Jan 04, 1907 thru Dec 25, 1908." These articles were recorded on my web pages almost twenty years ago.

Those web pages have not been updated since about 2012 but can still be found at my Rootsweb Freepages site. However, Ancestry, who now owns Rootsweb, is retiring the pages in 2024, and when returned, they will be static (I will not be able to make changes). In case the pages get lost, I am adding the content to this blog.

An asterisk * indicates that all of the information from the article is included in the notes below. To search for your family name, use your browser's "Find" function.

The 1908 issues seen in this post as well as many other issues from that year, can be viewed at NewspaperArchives. However, you must have a paid subscription. The 1908 issues are not found in the free The Portal to Texas History

I currently own this microfilm. If you would like to see the actual article, I will take a photo of the microfilmed article. To request this, please comment below this post, or comment on my Facebook page, or send me an email (go to the "About Me" tab at the top of this page).

Free Genealogical Resources: Bienville Parish, Louisiana

I've thought of writing about free Bienville Parish genealogical resources for a while, but a happy find last week inspired me - I found both volumes of History of Bienville Parish available to read online courtesy of the Bienville Public Library and Advantage Archives' Community History Archive.

At this Community History Archive, you will find searchable digital copies of both volumes of the History of Bienville ParishThe Bienville Democrat (issues from 1900-2022), census records, appointments of postmasters (from abt 1870), and Bienville Police Jury Minutes

During the last month, I have been posting items relating to the Mackey Lodge in Ringgold. At Louisiana Masonic Library/Museum - Past ProceedingsI found past membership rolls and other information about the lodge.

Not all books can be accessed online. Books
marked Public or Full Permission can be
viewed online, and some can be downloaded.
Protected books cannot be viewed online and
those with Limited Permission can be viewed
but not downloaded or printed.
Find more free resources, including many books, periodicals, newsletters, and
family histories, at the FamilySearch Digital Library simply by searching for "Bienville Parish." Use the quotation marks in your search to only see search results for Parish following Bienville

Adding a name to your search will greatly narrow your results. To find resources mentioning my Bryan family in Bienville Parish, my search looks like this: "Reddick Bryan" AND "Bienville Parish." Note that I kept the quotation marks around both Reddick Bryan and Bienville Parish, and I added the word AND in all capital letters to indicate that I wanted to search for all items that contained both "Reddick Bryan" AND "Bienville Parish."

If there are several spellings for the name, try using wildcards. Learn how to use wildcards on this post - Friday's Photo: It Worked! Using a Wildcard in my Search to Identify this Photo of Henry Green Davis of Bienville Parish, Louisiana

Below are a few of the Bienville Parish resources I have used from the FamilySearch Digital Library. Make sure you sign up for a free account before trying to use the library.

For links to additional resources, visit the Bienville Parish pages at FamilySearch Wiki and Linkpendium

Friday's Photo: A Dublin, Texas Postcard

Written around the edges of the card - 08 July 6, Will write you if I can get a minutes time.
Was so glad to get a letter from you. Wish you many returns. Ever Yours, Frannie E Bryan

I used to love to spend time looking at postcards in antique shops. I would buy local-to-me cards and cards from places my family lived. This card is from Dublin, a town in Erath County, Texas.

My grandparents, Redic Bryan, and Myrtie Hairston, lived in Dublin when they first married in 1900. Redic owned the Exchange Saloon until about May of that same year when it was written that he sold his business to I. A. "Dutch" Allard.

The postcard was sent on 6 July 1908 to Mrs. J Tom White in Midland, Texas, by Frannie E. Bryan, whose address is unknown. I did a cursory search for each of them with no success. There was a J. Tom White buried in Midland with only his name on a stone, but there were no other clues in census records or otherwise for J. Tom White.

I thought that Frannie Bryan might be the wife of Hardy Hooker Bryan of Granbury but Hardy did not marry his wife, Frances Almeda Gorden (also seen as Franeee and Fannie), until 1914. This postcard was sent in July 1908.

A much more thorough search needs to be completed to find Frannie's family. I don't believe that Frannie is connected to my Bryan family.

Friday's Photo: Young Woman in 1860s Dress

This wonderful photo of a young woman was found in the collection of Marguerite Cook Clark. Under the photo, written by Marguerite's mother, was "maybe Aunt Josie Cook ?"

The earrings, the plaid dress, the trim on the skirt, the sleeve shape, and the neckline all indicate that the photo was taken in the 1860s. Josie was born in 1856. She would have been a little young if this photo was taken in the 1860s. I compared this photo to a known photo of Josie on the Related Faces website, and they did not show a match.

This could be Josie but also one of so many Bryan, Martin, or Cook family women in Bienville Parish. Do you have this photo?
