Friday's Photo: Anna Rita Alter

Anna Rita Alter was my grandmother's first cousin. Her mother, Caroline "Carrie" Glynn, was the sister to Mary Lucy Glynn Giddens, my great-grandmother. Anna, the daughter of Caroline Glynn and William Alter, was born in the Bronx on June 7, 1905. 

Anna married Joseph John Doran in 1925 in the Bronx. It is said he died young. If so, it was before 1938 when she married James V. Morris in Dutchess County, New York. James and Anna had one child, a daughter. 

According to the obituary, Anna died at 58. She is buried, along with her husband and other relatives, in Fishkill Rural Cemetery. Anna's obituary can be seen below.

Friday's Photo: Julia Harvey Glynn is buried in Old Saint Raymond's Cemetery

Old Saint Raymond's Cemetery - 2012

Julia Harvey Glynn, my great-great-grandmother on my mother's mother's side is buried in the beautiful Old Saint Raymond's Cemetery in the Bronx, New York. 

Before visiting, I called the cemetery and was told Julia's grave was not marked. This did not suprise me as Julia Harvey Glynn was poor. She died on February 12, 1919  at 380 East 140th Street in the Bronx. This was the home of her daughter, Caroline Alter, a widow.

It was written that Julia was a widow; however she had been separated from her husband, Joseph Albert Glynn, since sometime in the late 1870s. They were found living as a family in 1875 and they were living apart in 1880. From 1909 to 1915, Julia, about age 70, was living in the New York City Home for the Aged and Infirm at Blackwell Island. She was described as being in fair physical condition and destitute. 

Julia was buried in section 18, range 95, grave 3.  A space for Julia's grave could not be found. The row her grave was in began next to this paved road. The numbers began at grave 4 and the numbers across the road did not match. I suspect Julia's grave, and a few others, might be under this road in the photo below. 

It was a beautiful day and the cemetery has some interesting markers. Here are a few more photos of the cemetery.

Caroline "Carrie" Glynn was the sister of my great-grandmother, Mary Lucy Glynn Giddens. Carrie was born in New York to Julia Harvey and Joseph AlbertGlynn.  In 1880, Carrie was living with her mother on Staten Island and her age was given as 5 years old. Her 14 year old sister, Lucy, was also living on Staten Island, but was living in a different household and working as a servant. In 1900, Carrie was a boarder in a home on Staten Island and her occupation was that of a wire worker.

Carrie married William Alter on August 18, 1904 on Staten Island. They had two children, William Gerard, who died young, and Anna Rita.

Carrie's husband died in 1918 and she worked to support her family. Carrie died in 1937. She is buried in St. Raymond's Cemetery in the Bronx.

Sunday's Obituary: Joseph Albert Glynn

Joseph Albert Glynn was my great-great-grandfather. He was born in Putney, Vermont on February 13, 1835, the son of Joseph Glynn and Nancy Read. He died on November 2, 1905. He was the husband of Julia Harvey and father of daughters Caroline "Carrie" Glynn Alter and Mary Lucy Glynn Giddens (wife of Charles A. Giddens.) His obituary is below. The name and date of the newspaper are unknown. 

Albert Glynn, 70, a farm laborer, was found dead in his home in East Putney Thursday morning. He lived alone and for sometime he had been ill with heart disease. On Wednesday night Will Richards, who lives at M. C. Ingall's stayed over night with him leaving early in the morning. About 8 o'clock Mrs. John Nicholas who lived near by and who had shown him many kindnesses went to his house and found him dead on the floor.  He had prepared breakfast and had been seized with a sudden attack of heart disease while doing his work. He leaves two daughters, one in Phillipsburg, N. J. and one in New York. The funeral was held at the house at 10 o'clock Saturday. Rev. R. C. Charlton officiating and the burial was in Maple Grove cemetery.
