Friday's Photo: George Moore

This photo was found in Margaret Cook Clark's collection and is labeled George Moore. Clothing and the photo style compared with similar photos in the collection indicate that this photo may have been taken in the late 1890s.[1] Assuming that this George lived in Northwest Louisiana, this may be George H. Moore, born in 1884 and the son of Mitchell Joel Moore and Lucy Louie Hall. George H. Moore was married to Ollie Ola Regan and spent much of his life living in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. [2]

John Joseph Quinn, a Native of County Galway and a WWI Veteran

John Joseph Quinn - WWI Veteran [1]

This week, in honor of Veteran's Day, I have written posts about five veterans; my parents and three veterans from Ringgold, Louisiana. This last post of the week is about WWI veteran John Joseph Quinn, my husband's great-uncle, who immigrated from County Galway in 1914. 

John Joseph Quinn, the son of William Quinn and Bridget Brannelly, was born on June 14, 1890, in the townland of Caherawoneen, County Galway.[2] In 1914, he immigrated to the United States arriving first in Boston on October 8th.[3] From there he went to Louisville, Kentucky where he had family and spent some time working in a cemetery. He later worked in Iowa and Connecticut before enlisting in the U. S. Army on May 27, 1918, in New York City.[4] 

On June 18, 1918, John became a naturalized citizen at Camp Wadsworth in South Carolina.[5] And, by June 30th of that same year, John was serving as a wagoner with the 153rd Depot Brigade in France.[6]

John's enlistment record stated that he was single and of excellent character. His vocation was that of a chauffeur. 

John was described as having gray eyes, black hair, and a dark completion. He was 27 years old and 5 feet and 8 1/2 inches tall.[7]

His daughter, Helen, said that her father loved the Army and was always interested in talking to veterans. After the war, John lived in New York City where he married, raised a family, and worked as a chauffeur and taxicab driver. He died in 1966 and is buried in Calvery Cemetery in Queens.[8]

Friday's Photo: Whit Criswell Bryan, A Veteran of Three Wars and a Pearl Harbor Survivor

This photograph was taken on his last day in the Navy.[1] 

My Mother, A Navy Veteran

Mom joined the Navy in September 1952. She attended boot camp in Bainbridge, Maryland from September to November. Following boot camp, she was stationed in San Diego where she attended the U.S. Navy School for Hospital Corpsmen at Balboa Naval Hospital. As Mom had the top grade for women in her class, she was given the first choice from the available duty stations. She wanted New Orleans but that was not a choice so chose Corpus Christi as it was close to New Orleans. 

By January 1954 she was working in a family clinic on a naval base in New Orleans where she met my father.  Mom and Dad married and I came along. Mom did not remain in the Navy as women who became pregnant were discharged from military service in the 1950s. However, she did serve as a Navy wife until my father's retirement in 1969.

From the Files of Marguerite Cook Clark: Thomas Jefferson Martin III - Resident of Ringgold and WWII Veteran

Thomas Jefferson Martin III's obituary is another of the approximately 175 newspaper clippings saved by Marguerite Cook Clark, her mother, and her daughters.[1] The photograph is from an interesting collection of photos sent to me by Mary V. Martin Smith, niece of Thomas Jefferson Martin III.[2]

Thomas Jefferson Martin III is a descendant of Reddick Bryan and Elizabeth Regan, making him my third cousin. His parents were Thomas Jefferson Martin Jr. and Willie Bessie Murph Woodard.[3]

From the Files of Marguerite Cook Clark: Dr. Vance W. Fletcher, Ringgold Physician and WWI Veteran

This obituary is another of the approximately 175 newspaper clippings saved by Marguerite Cook Clark, her mother, and her daughters.[1] 

Vance Wells Fletcher, the son of Edward Badger Fletcher and Roxanna McKeown, was born and grew up in Florida.[2] During WWII, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in France.[3] After the war, he attended Tulane University of Louisiana School of Medicine. [4]

By 1930, he and his wife, Ruth Williams, were living in Ringgold.[5]  Ruth, the daughter of B. Frank and Mamie Williams, died in 1938. In 1941, Vance married widow, Audra Macey Martin Ray, daughter of James Bryan Martin and Anna Cook.[6]

This obituary is one of approximately 175 newspaper clippings saved by Marguerite Cook Clark, her mother, and her daughters. [1] According to the Find a Grave website, the parents of Theodore Green Smith were Uriah Green Smith and Verna Estelle Rockett Smith. He is buried in section 25, site 758 in Arlington National Cemetery. [2] A picture of his headstone can be seen at the Arlington National Cemetery's app, ANC Explorer. Friday's Photo: Connections to my Giddens and Bryan Families - Joseph W. McMichael and Willie Marie Bryan

Yesterday, I posted the obituary of Joseph Walker McMichael.[2] I wanted to add a photo, but checked my digital files and did not find one. It wasn't until after I posted the obituary that I thought to look in my paper files. Julia McMichael Brittain (1942-2018) sent me copies of the above photo and much more in 1999.[3] 

This chart shows the relationship between Willie Marie

and my family. Julia, Willie Marie's grandaughter, was 

my third cousin-once-removed on my father's Bryan

side of the family. [5]

I knew how Willie Marie was connected to my Bryan family; however, until this morning, I had completely forgotten that Joseph Walker McMichael was connected to my Giddens family. 

Julia was my first source of information for both my Giddens and Bryan families when I began my research. She answered my genealogical query on the old Genforum in 1998 after my mother asked me to try to find something on my "new Internet" about her Giddens family. [4] Julia responded and sent me a large envelope containing an indexed descendants report of my Giddens family.

Joseph Walker McMichael, son of John McMichael and Laura Cornelia Evans was born on 12 October 1882. He was married to Willie Marie Bryan, daughter of Tillman Capers Bryan II and Mary Elizabeth McDowell. [2]

Joseph McMichael died on 16 November 1955 and his wife on 31 March 1979. They are buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Shreveport. [3]
