Friday's Photo: Ruth Hawk of Phillipsburg, New Jersey

This photo is labeled Ruth Hawk Peters. It is assumed the child is her daughter,
Mae (or May). If the child is Mae, the photo would have been taken about 1922.
Note the man in the window.

This photo, found in my grandmother's album, is labeled Ruth Hawks Peters. A search for Ruth at Ancestry.com revealed her full name as Marion Ruth Hawk and a birth date of January 28, 1897. She was about the same age as my grandmother, Edith Giddens. Were they childhood friends?

Ruth was one of seven children born to Hiram R. Hawk and Ida Carling. In 1900, the family was living on Sitgreaves Street in Phillipsburg but by 1905 both the Hawk and Giddens families were living on Mercer Street.

In 1920, Ruth and her husband, Charles Peters, were living with her parents on Washington Street. Ruth was 21 years old and not working. Charles was a freight handler.

The family was living on Summit Avenue in 1930. Ruth Peters was a teacher with a 10-year-old daughter, Mae. Charles was not seen on this census.

By 1940, Ruth, a teacher, had married Raymond J. Stewart.  Living with Ruth and her husband was daughter, May, along with her husband, Jay Vanemberg, and their infant daughter, Beverly.

Marion Ruth Stewart died on October 26, 1948, and is buried in Fairmount Cemetery in Phillipsburg, New Jersey.
